If you've been around the internet looking for a top home based business even for a short while, you have probably heard of MLM, or multi-level marketing. It's also called network marketing, and involves often complex payment scales that allow people to make a commission off the team they or others below them recruit. MLM opportunities are strongly advertised to those looking to start a home based business, and who have little or no experience in running one online. Yet the irony about these 'opportunities' is that the people who are usually successful are those that have experience in running an online business in the first place.

In my mind, MLM has inherent problems that make it a poor first choice for would-be entrepreneurs. There are more than 2 reasons for this, but here they are to get you started!

1. Expensive Autoship or Qualifying Monthly Payment

Network marketing usually requires distributors to sign up for a monthly autoship program in order to qualify for any commissions. This can run anywhere from $20 to $100 or more. - And that is before you even factor in the cost of shipping if it is a physical product. The shipping costs can really add up for overseas distributors.

But even if you are fortunate to find a program that you like with a low monthly fee, the fact remains that you are paying an amount monthly that is effectively dead money in terms of your business. It is not going to earn you anything. This is effectively a personal consumption expense, probably for something you wouldn't buy anyway. You still have all your other business expenses to factor in, and you would be better off truly investing that money into something that is essential to the running of your online business - like an autoresponder service, webhosting, or something similar.

No matter how the company sells that expense, it is still unproductive in business terms.

2. The Tools Provided Are Not Differentiated Or Unique

If you are provided with any online tools, they usually consist of a cookie cutter website that every single distributor gets. Now, if you have any online business savvy, you'd essentially ignore it, or just use it to get your warm leads (that you have generated) to sign up through it. You would not send any prospects there to start with. You certainly wouldn't buy leads and send them there. You'd have (or develop) your own website and profit funnel.

The lure and the promise of these tools is that it is easy, anyone can do it, that you don't need to go through the learning curve. It would be nice if that were true. But the 95% who try, spend money, months of time, and fail, have quite a different story to tell. Undifferentiated, cookie-cutter tools, don't work - at least not after the initial run of those who got in first.

And even if you sign a few people up through them, there is a very high rate of attrition because long term, these tools just don't work.

Network marketing has broad appeal to the inexperienced. The lure of the internet combined with it can prove irresistable, and the arguments put foward by the companies marketing these opportunities persuasive. Whilst it is true that the online business learning curve can be shortened, if you have the right information, it cannot be circumvented, or avoided. That is a key reason why so many people fail with MLM.

If you are looking for a good financial opportunity that will allow you to stay home with your family, then a home business network marketing program could be perfect for you. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of opportunities like these available to you and all of them can be conducted at home with your computer and the internet.

If you are willing to invest the time and the energy, then you can receive some great financial rewards from your home business. How successful your business is will be based mainly on how much you are willing to invest in it. You can work at your own pace and set your own schedule. Many people find this very appealing and the ideal solution to their income problems.

Are you looking for a way to earn extra money? Are you a stay at home mom, or retired, then you will most likely find this type of business a good way to supplement your income. To be a successful home based business owner, you will want to be a self starter who does not mind working by yourself and can manage to maintain a schedule. You will also want to be very friendly and enjoy talking with other people. You should be able to invest three or more hours a day to your network marketing program.

It will require you to be focused and disciplined. If you are very easily distracted, then this might not be the right type of job for you. You may get the flexible hours you want with your network marketing business but you will still want to invest those hours in order to make it a successful business.

Find a product or service to promote that you can get excited about. If you are not excited about it, then your customers will not be excited about it either. You will also want to work with a network marketing company that will give you all the support and ongoing training that you need in order to succeed. Browse through the internet and find websites that give you information on network marketing businesses and narrow your options down to three or four choices. Research your potential companies before you invest in them. Also, you will want to get quotes on how much it will cost you to get involved in the company.

What you can sell through your home business is only limited by your imagination. Take your time when you think about the different products and services before you select one

As someone who works at home operating a network marketing home business, if you have a website that promotes your product or service, you know you must have an on-going stream of traffic.

There are numerous ways to generate traffic. There are things you can do now to get that coveted traffic stream. Following are 6 sure fire tips you can use today to increase traffic to your home business website.

Tip #1: Use high quality, unique content if you want free search engine traffic for the long-term. This really is the most important tip of all. Unfortunately, it is one that many network marketers with a website ignore. By providing lots of information and keyword rich, as well as useful content, it will be much easier for the search engines and humans to find your site.

The search engines are weighed down with lots of junk. People have useless sites that really are no more than spam machines. So, if you can create a large, well established, and high quality site, it will be a solid investment for the future of your home business.

So, spend some time thinking about how to provide useful content for your niche that people will talk about, you will automatically end up with lots of free, one-way links to your site as people will pass on your information virally! People will love you because you have helped solve their problems.

Tip #2: Once you have created content, you must keep adding relevant and useful content. The more pages you have in your network marketing site that are full of on-topic material, the better off you will be. This may mean you have to create your own mini-site since most MLM distributor sites limit how creative you can get, but it is well worth it in the long term.

Tip #3: Make sure you choose a domain name that is easy to remember. Think not only about what people will remember, but also won't be confused with similar names. Go to NameBoy.com, where they have a tool that assists you in choosing a good domain name. Whois.net can also assist you in your search for domain names that are good and expired. Both of these sites are free.

Tip #4: Do serious and careful keyword research. If you want to get lots of traffic to your network marketing website, you will need to use the exact keywords that people are typing into the search engines. While there are free tools for this, they are not as comprehensive and expansive as other tools, which have a cost, attached. A good tool that you can use for minimal cost is Wordtracker.

Tip #5: Submit your site to the main directories. This is important because the more high quality links you have to your site, the more the search engines will like you! You can start with the major directories such as Yahoo! DMOZ.org, and sbd.bcentral.com. You then can move on to other directories such as Gimpsy, Skaffe, Joeant, GoGuides, and Business.com. Seven Seek, This Is Our Year, and Wow Directory just to name a few. You can go to http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php for a good list.

Tip #6: Don't forget the niche directories. You can search for smaller, specialist directories for your network marketing product or service. For example, if you sell nutritional products that can improve people's health, look for health related directories. To find niche directories use Search It! a great free tool.

These 6 tips are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the strategies you can use to increase traffic to your network marketing website. Pick a few that work for you and watch your website traffic explode!

Hey working stiff! Yeah you, with the aching back from working too hard and the puffy eyes from not getting enough sleep. Do you like being used and abused? Do you like slaving away your life filling the pocket of someone else while your pockets are always empty?

Such is the plight of the employed! Remember when there was a lower class, middle class, and upper class? Now there are just the rich and the working poor. Exploitation is the name of the game for the rich. People working for them just keep getting poorer and poorer because working men and women are denied proper compensation.

Workers get paid less and less so the boss can get more and more. Massive and ever increasing profit is all that matters to the boss. Workers are not cared about at all. If a machine could replace you then you would be replaced.

Have you seen your job go overseas? It is because paying you peanuts is not cheap enough. Penny paychecks with no benefits are the best they give you, but they don't want to give you anything. According to them, you should just be proud to be part of their team, giving excellent service so the company can keep rolling in the profits to fill the big fat pockets of the boss. Work like a dog, you lucky dog! Then die broke like a dog! It is because we get treated like animals that 95% of all Americans die broke.

It is a sad fact that workers deserve better treatment than what they are getting today. They are making the American dream possible, not for themselves, but for their boss. Consider this, when the rate of inflation goes up but your wages do not, that means you are making less money year after year. Your job is taking you down into the gutter. Soon as the job has gotten as much as it can out of you, it will toss you away like trash.

Why cater to a demeaning job that does not respect you. In order to get the respect you deserve, you need an alternative to a job. You need to take care of number one. No! Number one is not your boss like you were programmed to think! Number one is you. Putting yourself first is the best thing you can do for yourself. It also makes you unemployable!

Unemployable is good. It shows you have the self-esteem not to be pushed around and told what to do. Would you be the master of your time, your money, and your life? If so, work for yourself. Run your own business. Get the full rewards of being at the top and in control. Have the leverage of tax breaks and receiving the lion's share of money. Invest the money and make even more money. Yes! Your own business! That is what makes people wealthy!

Network marketing has always been a great way to get the word out about any business. No matter if you are selling a product or a service, with network marketing you can increase your sales in no time at all. And in todays day and age, it is more effective than ever before. In the past, networking was a great way to make contacts as well as sales but this has grown more than anybody could have expected. If you do not take the advantage, you will never reach your fullest potential.

If you do not know what network marketing is there is no reason to give up. The fact of the matter is that it is quite easy to understand, it is exactly what it sounds like. With network marketing you get your name out there by talking with other people and making industry contacts. The more people that you know, the better chance you have of making sales. And remember, the contacts that you make have contacts of their own. So in time word begins to spread about your offerings.

However, it is all about getting in touch with the people that can help you out the most. Of course your number one target should be people in your direct industry. In other words, people that would be interested in buying your product are people that you should network with.

The best way to get started is by making yourself accessible to a large amount of people. Believe it or not, social networking sites such as Myspace have become quite popular for individuals and businesses alike. With these services you can introduce yourself to millions of people without ever having to do too much work. And of course with each person that you meet, you have added another person to your network.

The good thing about network marketing is that you may not make a sale today from somebody that you meet. But down the line that same person may be looking for a product or service and remember the conversation that they had with you. But none of this is possible unless you get the word out and are not afraid to network in an aggressive manner.

If you want to make money, network marketing can help put you on the right track. For many years businesses have been using this system as a way to reach the next level and today this still holds true.

Generally speaking, network marketing does not cost a thing. All you have to do is find people to network with and get started. It does not get much easier and cost efficient than that.

One of the problems facing network marketers trying to build their downline is the out of pocket expenses associated with advertising. Whether you're buying leads for telephone and email contact, using PPC advertising, ad co-ops, solo ezine ads, or any other method of lead generation, the associated costs can quickly add up.

This can become a problem for many distributors who were attracted to the idea of setting up a home business with low costs. This is true of both multi-level affiliate programs, and network marketing.

Both of these types of programs can create significant residual income, but they take time to develop, and are certainly not a quick fix. But this dilemma, of finding a way to create income in the short to medium term, gave rise to the concept of the 'funded proposal'.

Funded proposals essentially market industry related information at a relatively low cost, which acts to both generate leads, and provide an income whilst doing so. The potential customer base is wider, as many people who won't be interested in a given opportunity or business model might be interested in more generic information.

Funded proposals also act to 'qualify' people, by charging a small payment for services. This eliminates 'freebie' seekers, or those with insufficient funds who really aren't in a position to set up a home business, even a low cost, internet based one.

They typically lead with a sales style page aimed at generating opt-in email addresses. These are then marketed to with the use of an autoresponder sequence. Sometimes reports are actually mailed out in the post also. Those using the system are generally give a replicated website that they can use to drive traffic to. The list they develop is one they own.

These systems do have an advantage in that they are more easily duplicated by the downline. Special skills aren't required to set up websites, autoresponders, write compelling sales letters, or persuasive autoresponder emails. The main thing the downline has to do is learn to drive traffic to their site.

Whilst these types of systems are very useful, there is an often overlooked method to fund prospecting - and that is through using contextual advertising like adsense. A website is needed, but blogs are a perfectly legitimate and simple way to post optimized articles, with contextual ads on them. The blog could even link to a funded proposal page, acting as a traffic funnel to it, and monetizing the traffic that is just looking for information, but doesn't like the offer available.

Blogs are very easy to set up, and are a great training ground for traffic generation. There are a lot of good blog directories that are a source of established backlinks. And blogs can be themed on a niche associated with your home business proposal. You can even use article marketing to promote your blog.

Any type of site that provides good information is a way to build trust and credibility with your visitors and prosepcts. That is the basis of any good relationship!

If you're a network marketer, or affiliate marketer, you will stand a much better chance of long term success if you build a website. It helps develop credibility with your prospects, and when it's done right, it can even provide you with a steady stream of leads from the search engines.

For many people, building a website may seem like a daunting task. It doesn't need to be, however. There are a lot of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors that take care of the 'behind the scenes' HTML coding. So, what are the steps in creating a site?

1. You need to decide on a subject, or theme.

You probably have a broad theme of 'online business', or 'work at home' in mind. However, try and look at the different types of prospects you might like to attract. What are their interests? This can help in narrowing a topic down a bit. However, you might like to target a broad area too. Just be sure not to include too many 'irrelevant' areas. You can always build other sites for that.

Another way to look at finding a topic for your site is to consider what the main product is. If it's a health product, you might want to build a health related site. This way you can sell products to customers, build a list of subscribers, and they may well be interested in developing a business themselves. Above all, though - be creative (and do your keyword research)!

2. You need a Domain name

Pick a domain name that says something about your business, whilst preferably containing your main keyword. It is usually best to pick a 2 or 3 word phrase. But it's not necessary (or really desirable) to separate the words by dashes.

3. You need to organize the structure of your site

Your site should have a logical structure so visitors will find what they are looking for. Whilst it goes without saying, many people create sites that have very poor usability and navigation. Have your subject organized in your own mind before you start the website. This can really help keep the final product clear.

4. You need keywords to build articles around

Keyword focused articles help increase your chance of ranking well in the search engines, provided they are chosen well. They provide a way of helping the search bots identify what a page is about, and they can also provide a good source of inspiration for the articles themselves. Wordtracker is a good source of keywords.

5. You need web hosting

There are some packages that come with webhosting and a web builder. If you don't know HTML, and find the prospect of transferring files to the server daunting, this is a good option to explore.

6. You need to upload your site to your web host

7. You need a way of capturing visitor's name and email address

This will allow you to start building a relationship with your subscribers, your prospects. It's an excellent way to gently introduce people to your opportunity, and you can also make money by referring other good products you come across. Best of all, this list is yours.

8. You need a follow-up system that is automated

Autoresponders allow you to have a system in place that follows up with your prospects automatically, over time, providing them with the good content you write, and gently introducing them to your business offers.

9. You need to start driving traffic to your site.

This is a big subject, but there are a number of very effective ways to send traffic to your site, irrespective of the search engines (though some of them will help in your search engine rankings too). Articles, and exchanging links are two no-cost ways of building a steady stream of traffic, and they also help get your site indexed.

A lot of people would shy away when we start talking about home based business in network marketing for the simple reason that they dont want to sell goods and services. If you take a closer look into network marketing, you will find out that it does not necessarily mean peddling or offering goods and services to your friends or family members. In fact, network marketing is really a system of income sharing and cost sharing.

How does a home based business on network marketing work? Network marketing work by recruiting members who will use the product it is selling. The system is multi level where a person who becomes a member of the network can recruit a friend or a family member to register under his or her network. Every time the recruit purchases a product of the company, the recruiter gets a commission. The good thing about network marketing is that you do not only get a commission on your direct recruit but also on the purchases of your recruits recruit usually up to the fourth level. Some networking companies give commission up to the eight level of recruits which really is a big advantage if you have a wide network.

Many people have benefited from network marketing. People who set up home business in network marketing have succeeded in earning huge money from their networks. The key to success in the networking business is helping each other build a wide member base. A member who helps his or her recruit in recruiting more people would benefit and most likely enjoy the benefits of earning commissions from their recruits recruit so it is really a good idea to help each other.

There are many critics who would say that network marketing only makes the people on top of the network rich while those at the bottom will not get anything. Well, that is a matter of opinion. The system is really about pooling of resources by creating a network of consumers. If you build a network, not everybody could be on top at once but everyone will have a fair chance of making it to the top if one will work hard enough. A home based business in network marketing is created to function as a team business, meaning you help each other out. The structure is like a pyramid where the base is bigger than the top. As more people who are added to the base of the pyramid, those who are on the upper portion will be pushed to the top. Every time a line below the pyramid is added, the line above it will reach another level. The idea really is to help each other add more people at the base of the system so that you can reach the top. In effect, as you help those people below you to reach another level of the network, you will also be helping yourself get to another level of the pyramid.

Research has estimated that by 2008 15 million people in the U.S.A will be "working from home". This means that roughly 5-10% of the population will have found a way to conveniently work from the comfort of their own home.

In Canada you can safely double or even triple those numbers. Thanks to current social & economic trends, many people have shifted to become more open to the working from home concept. In fact to many it is a dream come true.

The equipment needed for setting up a home office is easy to find, relatively inexpensive and most of the time extremely user friendly. Also nowdays, People are seeking more flexible schedules for many reasons. There has also been a trend towards not appreciating having to answer to some superior who governs their every move.

Is this possible? Or are we just fooling ourselves by thinking it can be done with success? Well, the answer is yes and no. You'll notice that hrough the generations negative associations have been linked to certain things, people or places. These beliefs have transcended through time and have been handed over to generations as golden rules that cannot be challenged. Most of these beliefs are difficient in any physical or fully researched evidence.

Allow me to explain the above; in my research I have come across many articles & written pieces regurgitating the same misinformation stating that all of the work from home businessess & those involved in them are doomed to fail.

Stating that you work from home is not normally associated with a wow! or how did you do it response. Infact and quite frequently, the reflected thoughts are those of you must be a bum with no real job. Unless you drive a crazy top of the line car & live in a mansion, then the thought trend is that you just must be involved in some sort of illegal business.

I usually like to give this example; in the medical world, and through the ages, when a surgery is successful it is believed that it's so because the surgeon was an expert. However, when the surgery fails or there is a negative outcome, not infrequently will fingers point at Anesthesia. I bring this up because we all know of the Anesthesia related deaths from the early days of Ether(1846), still and 161 years later; the number 1 fear people have as they undergo surgery, where someone will cut into them and literally mess with their insides, is the fear of the misconceived fact that they might die from Anesthesia.

The error is this: although it is true that during 1846 many people died from anesthesia, people are reluctant to believe & trust that Since then, other very hard working people who were very dedicated to the ultimate well being of humanity advanced in research and in understanding of the human body so much, have been successful in establishing the modern day safe Anesthetic.

In relation, we have been lead to believe that what ever a home business involves, its not a real job & that it will and has to be easy money. As a result they slack off & stop working hard enough expecting to magically make money! and when the money situation deteriorates or the business fails they immediately call it quits and claim that they have been scammed.

These disaster stories then travel around and rumors develop, the rumors then become facts and facts are believed. And as we attract what we believe, guess what ends up happening? Having said that, every now and then someone comes along who believes they will make the difference & challenges theses so called facts.

Some, who are few but factual but still have the right attitude, become successful & others, by repeating the errors and mistakes of others, and by believing these misconceptions, simply repeat history.

Here are some facts I found interesting:
A recent study showed that of those who claim to work from home 25% spend less than one hour on their office work when working from home, 53% spend less than three hours and only 14% put in a full eight hours. And you ask why most home businesses fail? It is not because some one has scammed some one. It is because we as humans have some internal faults built in us & without recognizing them, and correcting them we trip and fall.

We, by default, refuse to feel failure and deflect the reasons that caused our failure on to the external uncontrolable environment, hence the common phrases of (I was scammed, it was a bad company, my mentor was useless...etc)

Remember;
Expectations without preparation & participation will lead to ruin.

Home based business network marketing is often not a simple task. As a home business owner, you probably dont have the resources that larger ventures can allocate to advertising. However, by using your personal network, you will be able to raise awareness about your home business.

Why the need to advertise? If you have an excellent product, you may feel that people should seek you out so they can have the benefits of what you offer. This, of course, makes for poor business. No matter what you do or what you offer, you will still have to promote your products. How will people do business with you if they dont even know that you are in business?

Your personal network is an excellent way to jump start your advertising efforts. Your personal network includes, of course, your family, your friends and your acquaintances. Because home based businesses are invariably small at the beginning, you will need all the help that you can get, so you should start soliciting sales from the people who know and love you.

Just because you are selling to your family and friends, it does not mean that you can be lax and complacent. In fact, you should probably do more for them than the average customer. Within reason, do all that you can to satisfy them, then ask them to do you a favor, Ask them to use their personal networks to get the word about your business out.

You can use a variety of gimmicks to get your home based business network marketing campaign to a great start. For instance, you might want to provide your friends and family with stickers that they can slap on their cars or maybe flyers that they can post at work. Or you might give them a healthy stack of business cards that they can give away for you. The key, of course, is to make it easy for them to spread the word.

These days, technology makes it easier to advertise. And if you dont believe it, witness the rise of social networking sites like Friendster or MySpace. If you maintain accounts on these sites, you might want to include a few ads on your profile. Alternatively, you might want to buy some ad space in some of the more popular sites on your local community.

If you went about it right, it should not be too difficult to get more people to notice you. A home based business network marketing campaign will depend a great deal on what people say about your business, so keep fairly close watch over the grapevine. If you hear any criticism, dont get defensive. Use it as an opportunity to improve. As long as you keep improving, you will see results sooner or later.

------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

This article is based on the assumption that you are using a word processing program of some kind in a Windows environment. If you are not using a word processor, the principles will still apply, but they must be implemented manually.

Writing and editing are two totally different tasks. Writing is a creative process, whether the work is fiction or non-fiction. Editing is a critical process. If writers attempt to edit as they write, their creative ability is inhibited. Because each task demands a very specific focus each must be handled separately. Editing should not start until the writing task is completed.

When editing your own work, your eye and mind tend to either fill in, or correct, many errors and, as a result, they are left uncorrected in the manuscript. In order to avoid this, it helps to break any patterns used in creating the original work. If at all possible, the work to be edited should be allowed to "cool off" in a file or desk drawer for a while. The purpose of this is to break the connection between the work and the writers remembrance of the exact words and phrasing used. An additional technique used for breaking this connection is to reformat the work. This can be done by changing the margins, font face and font size, line spacing, etc. This should be an easy task for any word processor.

When saving your work as you edit, the product of each editing session should be saved with a different name. If your original work was called "manuscript.doc," your first save should be called "manuscript1.doc." This means you will always be able to go back and check your original page setup.

If the task of editing is broken down into four (4) steps it becomes less of an onerous task and the result is a much more thorough job.

Step 1:

Run your spell checker without the grammar checker. This seems like the most obvious step however the spell checker can only do part of the job. It will check every word against an internal dictionary and highlight or underline in red, those words that it doesn't find in its dictionary. That means that if you spelled the word "too" and meant to use the world "to" your spell checker will accept either because they are both correct as far as it is concerned.

Spell checkers are normally set to NOT CHECK capitalized words or names, or words with numbers. Ignore these names on your first pass and just correct any misspelled words brought up by the spell checker.

On a second pass with the spell checker, not only verify the spelling of the proper nouns, but also make a note of the correct spelling on a separate piece of paper or in another program. The easiest way to do this is to boot up a text program and multi-task - switching between your manuscript and the text program. This will enable you to quickly verify the spelling of a proper noun throughout your work.

Step 2:

Run the grammar checker. Almost every word processing program has the ability to check grammar and will allow the user to establish both the type of work to be checked along with the specific grammar rules that are to be used during the check. You can set these parameters to fit your need, but remember that your writing style is most important. Don't let the grammar-check program dictate what your style should be. As you go through your manuscript, make those changes, which are obvious problems, such as punctuation, run-on sentences, subject and verb agreement, etc. Don't change your writing style to fit the grammar-checker.

Step 3:

If your manuscript includes dialog, it should be checked for problems with syntax and general usage. The best way to do this is to have someone else read the dialog, out loud, with no voice inflection. Your ear will uncover problems with dialog better than your eye. If you don't have someone else to work with, you will do almost as well by reading the dialog out loud and recording it on some kind of recording device. When you play the dialog back, you will discover problems that your eyes overlooked.

In reviewing writing where there is no dialog, check each paragraph for focus. Is it lean and direct, or are there words that can be removed that will provide a clearer structure? Since this type of problem involves a broader discourse on writing techniques, we can only refer you to the vast number of books on writing that are available for almost every writing project.

Step 4:

Check the overall appearance of your work for uniformity. Have you used the same font face and point size throughout? Is the first line of each paragraph indented the same number of spaces? Is your line spacing consistent? Are your margins consistent? On of the beauties of a good word processor is that once you establish the rules for "page setup" and a "normal" paragraph, and use them throughout your work, you can change the appearance of your entire manuscript by simply changing the settings of either or both rules. This can be extremely helpful if you are submitting the manuscript to several organizations, each of which has different formatting requirements.

Conclusion.

If you follow the 4 steps listed above, editing your own writing will be much less difficult and the result will be greatly improved.

One of the central tenants in the promotional material about network marketing, is the power of duplication. The story goes that you'll refer 3 people, who'll each refer 3 people, and so on...

This is truly the power of leverage, but the problem is that most people who sign up for programs have little to no experience either online or offline in building a business and networking it. They don't know enough to provide valuable information that acts as a relationship builder, and most often, they don't have the skills to set up an autoresponder account or a website.

Most network marketing programs have information on how to generate leads, but if someone doesn't have the skill-set to write a good autoresponder series, they're left to rely on the one the company has provided. Unfortunately, this is often a series of sales messages, that provide little of real value to someone starting out. The leads you load up to this autoresponder series are simply sent a series of letters telling them why they should
'buy-buy-buy'. And most people have a sense that they actually need to know a little more about how things work on the internet to make their prospective business successful So, the sign-up rate is not going to be particularly high.

Of the people who do sign up from those emails, how many of them are now going to be equipped to make the program work? After all, if they don't start making money in a few months, they will drop out of the program. And the principle of leverage won't start to work if people aren't being guided or taught to take effective action. It's easy to take action, even easier to spend money on poor quality advertising. But that won't build a business.

A system needs to be in place to develop people into leaders - to take them from newbie to expert in the shortest time possible. And it's a system that needs to take into account the fundamental principles of direct sales. The internet is simply a different form of direct sales, and it's a well known fact that most people won't buy from you until they've seen your tips, or other valuable information, seven or more times.

Having an autoresponder system, set up with newsletter style emails that regularly keep in touch with your prospects, is vital for success. It provides several benefits. The first is that over time, as people begin to see that you are offering something of real value in helping them get started with an online business, more sign-ups into your preferred program will naturally follow. What is more, these sign ups will have been effectively trained in some of the fundamental principles and methods that lead to success on the internet.

There are a number of ways to get content for the series. If you're just starting out yourself, your upline may be able to help you collaborate on a series of letters. Or, you could invest in some good quality courses and study them until you have more knowledge yourself. And, you could of course hire a writer with small business/internet marketing/network marketing experience to write the articles for you. These could then be shared with your downline to get them started.

As well as an autoresponder system, you'll need a direct sales page that ethically persuades people to sign up to your autoresponder series. There are several options for creating that sales letter. You could study other successful sales letters and adapt them to your needs. Or, hire someone to write it for you. Although this can be expensive, it's a one time investment that you can share with your downline, by providing them access to your sales copy.

The principle of duplication requires going 'above and beyond' the sales material the company has given each member. By investing either time, or money, or both, in acquiring quality prospecting material, this can then be shared with your downline to create a truly duplicatable system. Perhaps all won't follow it, but it will give potential leaders a chance to really shine.

In other articles, I've mentioned how superior the leads that you generate, from either PPC advertising or establishing your own website, are. But PPC advertising can get expensive, and requires it's own learning curve if you want to get a reasonable return (in terms of signups to your program). What are the alternatives?

Should you set up your own home business site? That is certainly one way, but if you're just starting out in online marketing, you won't have much credibility. And the content you write will reflect this. Of course, you could get others to write your content, through services like Elance, but you'll need to know a bit about your topic to ensure that the writers are providing you with pertinent and useful material. Plus, this exercise can get expensive if you're paying for good quality articles (it's easy to get bad articles cheap, however! - But would you want them on your website?)

This is where the value of niches comes in. Niche marketing is something that is more often associated with online endeavors other than network marketing, however, the same principles apply.

The principle behind niche marketing is that with a smaller, defined interest group, it is easier to achieve good rankings in the natural search results, provided you follow a few tried and true search engine optimization practices. On another level, if you have a smaller, defined niche, you are going to be able to present information in a way that makes sense to them - to their needs, and desires. It's a common business practice to define your target market. You can't be everything to all people, and you certainly can't sell everything to all people. This is just as true online as it is offline.

Thinking creatively, and outside of the home business market, what are the options for your network marketing opportunity?

First of all, what products does your business opportunity sell? This is a great place to start thinking of topics for your website. Not only will you potentially make retail sales, but from that base of interested customers, you can find people who want their own home business. As well as having information pages on topics relating to those products, you can mention your business opportunity on your 'About Me' page. Or even write articles on how those products have helped you - weaving this in with other information about those products. You want to be careful that you don't appear 'salesy', however.

The beauty of this method for generating leads is that you can express your enthusiasm in a way where people's innate opposition to advertising isn't up. And maybe you won't convert everyone into a business prospect, but they may become lifetime customers on autoship. Or join your membership site if your opportunity is related to information products.

So, if your business is about mortgages, tax, health, personal development, or even space exploration, this would be the starting point to generate ideas for a content driven website. A website that will bring you a steady supply of leads (and customers), without costing a lot of money to set up and maintain.

And, as a side benefit, you'll also have the opportunity to make money with contextual advertising programs.
